Superb visit to @tomstuartsmith garden and plant library at @sergehillproject and thanks to @millie_souter for her insight and time around the garden and to Mark for the interesting construction discussions.

A wonderful inspiration, lots of photos taken and interesting to see how different plants compliment each other as well as investigating their experimental trial beds, which have very handy QR codes to list the plants used.

You also can't forget the stunning Apple House designed by @studiobenjamin , with high ceilings and textural materials framing the garden in different directions. Definitely look forward to attending a few events in the future and having another wander around when we have more time.

Lovely day out for the @cpresussex Countryside Day at the @kneppwilding Estate , enjoying time outdoors, childrens activities and a series of talks and activities set in the beautiful setting of the @kneppwildingkitchen and cafe, and wonderful to meet some of the local CPRE Sussex team.

Many thanks to the enthusiastic and nature loving Tony Whitbread (President of the @sussexwildlifetrust) for the walk and talk within Knepp, sharing heaps of great insights and information on their varying landscape strategies, working with nature, recording data and the interaction between certain plant species and the insects and birds within the estate.

𝙍𝙚𝙘𝙡𝙖𝙞𝙢𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙨𝙥𝙖𝙘𝙚𝙨, 𝙘𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙝𝙚𝙖𝙡𝙩𝙝𝙮 𝙨𝙩𝙧𝙚𝙚𝙩𝙨 𝙜𝙖𝙧𝙙𝙚𝙣 𝙗𝙮 @surreycountycouncil. This garden shared easy inspirational ideas of how you could turn parking spaces into vibrant, functional community green spaces for people and nature.

🌿 The garden design followed the principles of the ‘Healthy Streets for Surrey’ code, an initiative aimed at creating healthier, more people-friendly streets through thoughtful, inclusive design and enabling collaboration with communities for transforming parking spaces into more community-friendly areas.

Thanks to my RHS buddy @horticulturaldreamer (an amazing & passionate youth worker with Surrey Council) for showing me around the garden and sharing some of the wonderful collaborative stories behind the making of this garden, as well as her own time collecting plants! Also brilliant hearing the passion and excitement from both herself and Helen Currie (the Placemaking Specialist who I'd previously met through Charlotte Glaziers workshop) for bringing this garden together.

⭐ 𝘾𝙤𝙡𝙡𝙖𝙗𝙤𝙧𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙫𝙚 𝙞𝙣𝙥𝙪𝙩:
- The art backdrop - designed and painted with the ideas and input inspired by nature from year 8 art students
- Colourful bollards designed by local artist @dreamfairy1
- Recycled and repurposed materials were used to create "Fence Birds" working with young people at the Ash Youth Centre.

✍️ The street design was divided into 4 zones:

One was an existing bay

Walton Parklet - a communal seating area built into planters, and surrounded with colourful planting, including species which contribute to cleaning the air by absorbing vehicle pollution.

Cranleigh Garden - an urban rain garden with stepping stones and small pond, to manage rainwater and reduce flooding

Guildford Parklet - a communal space constructed from reclaimed materials to create the planters and seating

🎖️ Brilliant news - this garden designed for the RHS Hampton Court Flower Show 2025 was highly commended with an RHS Environmental Innovation award for its commitment to sustainable garden design.

Visiting Whaligoe Steps on the North Coast 500 route in Scotland.
Surrounded on three sides by 250 feet cliffs, Whaligoe Steps zig-zag down the cliffside to a harbour at the foot of the steps which has been a long standing landing point for herring, salmon, whitefish and shellfish. It was a good workout running up and down these and cant imagine the fitness of the women who do this several times carrying 10kg of fish with them!

Thanks to Will Hugh from @caradonstone for the tour around their quarry, hidden in the rugged beauty of Cornwall. Although it’s a stunning location, it’s not just about the view, it’s about understanding the deep history beneath our feet, combined with local skill and expertise. Will’s extensive knowledge of the landscape and the geography of the area is truly meaningful and invaluable, from the metamorphic multi-coloured Cornish slate to the beautiful textured Cornish granite.

The area is known for it’s historic mining heritage, and we visited the intriguing historic granite mine high up on the hill, which Caradon Stone is committed to preserving. This area is surrounded with zones of granite stone piles, some which are newer smoother pieces and others which have a bit more character, interest, natural varying shapes with moss and lichens growing on them!

By visiting and supporting local quarries like this, we’re helping to support skilled jobs in the community and promoting sustainable, locally sourced materials over imported stone. As well as preserving craftsmanship, Will highlighted they regularly work with several skilled sculptors, stonemasons and artists to create beautiful landscape and architectural features.

Mawson’s dream in timber, stone, and space,
A Landscape Architect of quiet grace.
A crafted calm amid the urban air,
The columns stand strong, with stories they share.
Long past the days of 1905’s dream,
Cradled in time and draped in summer green.

The arched ascent, between order and wild,
Across brick arches, we brightly smiled.
A hidden surprise, yet perfectly placed,
Where light passes gently on each weathered face.

In shaded nooks where memories dwell,
Each fleeting moment gently casts a spell.
Roses blush beside textures, shade, and light,
A tranquil pulse in London’s hidden delight.

As intrigued designers, we listen and we wander,
In summer’s warmth, we admire and we ponder.

The Partnership Management Plan is the most important document for the National Park. It is a Plan for everyone who has an interest in or cares about the National Park. The Plan is for the National Park as a whole and sets out the shared ambitions of many different partners for the next five years, including the work of the National Park Authority.

❓️ Can you believe... this lovely space used to be an empty plot just over a year ago.

🌿 It's now a lovely community garden, free and open to all. A therapeutic green space dedicated to enhancing mental health ---> with the colourful planted borders, clover lawn, garden sculptures, seating areas and raised growing vegetable growing area.

A wonderful example for incorporating water into your garden, without needing heaps of space for a large pond, simply a well designed system to fit your space.

Gently flowing from a high point in the woodland edge, over the rocks, under a stone bridge to appear on the other side in a shallow gravel catchment area only to disappear again.

This is designed as an Aquascape system, a constructed water feature based on a natural system which blends seasmlessly with their surroundings. It doesn't require any chemicals to be added. This can also be fed from you water harvesting system to recylce and circulate water.

I was delighted to be invited to the @southdownsnp , @arundistrict.council and @oneplanet.life workshop and training for the Middleton-on-Sea Council. The One Planet Platform is an online tool used to develop a common framework to track and accelerate progress with regards to climate action, healthy communities and nature recovery strategies.

The aim of this is to develop a cohesive approach within our Parish as well as the connection to other local authorities, key sector partners, charities and local community groups. This data allows for a greater collaboration and communication, and offers a holistic view of how our Parishes and West Sussex is approaching these varying issues.

The 10 main principles which can be mapped in an easily understandable graphics Mindmap include:

3. Culture & Community

4. Land & Nature

5. Sustainable Water

6. Local & Sustainable Food

Absolutely amazing Groundswell 2025 💜💥🌱🙏🏼 Community, inspiration & passion! The place to be to learn all things regenerative agriculture, environment, nature, soil health, farming, food and so much more!

In a time when we feel there is so much chaos, questions and uncertainty in the world…… an event like this reminds us just how many people, businesses, charities and communities there are out there working together, or in individual groups, but with the same incredible and important goals for both people and the environment.

Grateful to be offered the opportunity to contribute to our local Middleton-on-Sea community magazine on the topic of "Environmentally Friendly Gardening"

Those of you out there with landscape, design, garden, sustainability knowledge know the abundance of advice that can be shared on this subject is vast, and enough to fill a whole book!

So, it was definitely a good challenge to summarise this topic into only 400 words, to share practical and realistic tips, helpful to the local community members who could easily apply these to enhance their own gardens or outdoor spaces.

Some of the items suggested to encourage the thought process in the direction of environmentally friendly gardening included healthy soil, climate resilient planting, supporting wildlife, water management, pest management and embracing natural ecosystems.

Lovely morning out at Holywell in Eastbourne for the ‘Music in Bloom’ planting celebration with @eastbourne_ebp ( Eastbourne Business Partnership) Eastbourne Mayor Cllr Margaret Bannister @mayorofeastbourne , the winning pupils from the 2025 design competition from Parkland Infant School and to have Darren and Keith from @idverdeuk joining too, who have supported, planted and sponsored the event for 20+ years.

Thanks to Tim Sorenson from EBP for all his support and hard work supporting such a brilliant event over the years, it's wonderful to see the excitement from the children taking part and being able to contribute to a small space in their local community.

The EBP's "In-Bloom" event is a long-standing tradition, now in its 31st year and this winning design included the iconic Eastbourne Bandstand.....and Im looking forward to next year!

Natural process-led and multi-layered landscapes. You CAN create beautiful and resilient landscapes on poor soil, landscapes that are a joy to explore and immerse yourself within, landscapes that support a rich tapestry of biodiversity while flourishing on poor soils.

This landscape is truly an inspiring and striking example of nature’s resilience, flourishing on poor soils with limited irrigation. The success of this garden highlights how ecological abundance can emerge, even on degraded land, offering inspiration for sustainable gardening and rewilding practices, designed by Tom Stuart-Smith Studio and James Hitchmough

We had a fantastic afternoon at Knepp Wilding, with the rewilding planting workshop and garden tour from Suzi Turner, understanding the strategies and challenges behind this 1.3 acre garden, which was once intensively managed with very low ecological value, and strategically layered with a mixture of crushed concrete, sand and topsoil in varying locations and differing percentage mixes, the garden now teems with life, showcasing a rich tapestry of biodiversity.

Highly recommend a visit to those interested in plants and stategies for sustainable and thriving landscapes for a changing climate.

We can often get stuck over thinking designs or spaces, once you start putting lines to a pages, you break that fear of staring at a blank page 😅

From there you're able to create more and more layers, changing the design, pushing the boundaries, questioning the use of spaces, the drainage, the conection to the sites context and biodiversity enhancements .....

And even better if Landscape Architects are involved in early stages of the project!

We can work with the architects and engineers, analysing the built form as well as the surrounding landscape.....
